In the case of Rupert Sheldrake's latest work, the controversial content is right on the front cover. Conditioned by the tight rigor of contemporary scientific thinking, we either look for rational explanations or we file the phenomenon away in our minds as "unexplained" and are careful not to talk about it with our scientist friends. Dogs That Know When Their Owners Are Coming Home not only provides fascinating insight into animal, and human, behavior, but also teaches us to question the boundaries of conventional scientific thought. This remarkable book deserves a place next to the most beloved and valuable books on animals, such as When Elephants Weep, Dogs Never Lie About Love, and The Hidden Life of Dogs. Additionally, the authors hope to test whether dogs produce tears in response to negative emotions, and if the dogs cry happy tears when they reunite with other dogs, which would have implications on dog socialization as well as domestication by humans.
Shamans experience themselves as being guided by animals or as changing into animals, understanding their language, and sharing in their prescience and occult powers. In this chapter I explore the evolution and the nature of human-animal bonds. He castigates traditional scientists for their refusal to countenance anything that doesn't fit in with their existing paradigms and challenges them to come up with some more "acceptable" explanation--but none is forthcoming. These intriguing questions about animal behavior convinced world-renowned biologist Rupert Sheldrake that the very animals who are closest to us have much to teach us about biology, nature, and consciousness. "We had never heard of the discovery that animals shed tears in joyful situations, such as reuniting with their owners, and we were all excited that this would be a world first," said Kikusui.

The earliest named hominid species, known from fossil remains, are Australopithecus ramidus and Australopithecus anamensis, dating back over 4 million years. The first stone tools were used about 2 1/2 million years ago, and signs of meat eating appear about a million years later, around the time that Homo erectus spread out of Africa into Eurasia (Figure 1.1). The first cave paintings, including many of animals, appeared about 30,000 years ago. The agricultural revolution began about 10,000 years ago, and the first civilizations and written scripts about 5,000 years ago. But in spite of all this exploitation, abuse, and neglect, many people form bonds with animals from childhood onward.
Is There a Canary Dog?
"Unlike any other animals, dogs have evolved or have been domesticated through communication with humans and have gained high-level communication abilities with humans using eye contact," wrote the authors in the paper. An additional finding of the study was that the dogs' tear volume increased further when an oxytocin solution was applied to their eyes. This suggests that oxytocin—a bonding hormone produced in the human body after childbirth and falling in love—might mediate tear secretion during an owner-dog reunion.

The Dog's Almighty Sniffer
Formal investigations into happy tears in dogs and other animals haven't been done much before, however, animals have been anecdotally observed to show signs of joy or excitement when their owners come home, such as by wagging their tails and running around erratically. Their ancestors, wolves, hunted in packs, just as men hunted, and from an early stage dogs were used in hunting as well as for guarding human settlements. The researchers performed something called a Schirmer Tear Test on a group of 22 dogs, which involves measuring the animal's tear volume. They found that the amount of tears produced by the dog's eyes increased significantly when they were reunited with their owner compared to someone who they were familiar with but wasn't their owner. "Dogs have become a partner of humans, and we can form bonds," Kikusui said in a statement. "In this process, it is possible that the dogs that show teary eyes during interaction with the owner would be cared for by the owner more."
Scientists have found that dogs produce more tears by volume when reunited with their owners compared with non-owners. The Australian veterinarian David Paxton goes so far as to suggest that people did not so much domesticate wolves as wolves domesticated people. Wolves may have started living around the periphery of human settlements as a kind of infestation. Some learned to live with human beings in a mutually helpful way and gradually evolved into dogs. At the very least, they would have protected human settlements, and given warnings by barking at anything approaching.
Perception of Time
Young children are commonly given teddy bears or other toy animals, and they like hearing stories about animals. An interesting explanation as to how dogs may predict their owner's arrival might come from how long the owner's scent lingers since he leaves the house. According to a paper published in the journal Current Biology, dogs are capable of emotional tears, especially when seeing someone they are very fond of.

Dogs also have uncanny ability to chain together a longer series of events. We see this all the time in dogs suffering from separation anxiety. These dogs get nervous the moment you start your "getting-ready-to-go-to-work" routine as soon as you get up and prepare breakfast. Dogs often surprise us with their astounding abilities, and something really surprising is a dog's talented perception about knowing when his owners are coming home.

The old image of man the hunter striding confidently out onto the African veldt is a myth. Only a small proportion of the food eaten by today's hunter-gatherers comes from animals hunted by the men; most comes from gathering done mainly by women. The exceptions are the hunter-gatherers of the plant-poor Arctic regions. Hominids and early Homo sapiens obtained small amounts of meat more by scavenging the kills left by more effective predators like big cats than by hunting for themselves.
What Do Dogs Think When They're at the Vet?
If this theory is confirmed, it means that our ancient companionship with dogs may have played an important part in human evolution. Dogs could have played a major role in the advances in human hunting techniques that occurred some 70,000 to 90,000 years ago. Our ancestors lived as gatherers and hunters, with gathering far more important than hunting.
Dogs get so emotional when their owners come home to them that they cry tears of joy, scientists have found. In hunter-gatherer cultures, human beings do not see themselves as separate from other animals but as intimately interconnected. The specialists in communication with the nonhuman world are shamans, and through their guardian spirits or power animals, shamans connect themselves with the powers of animals.
About the Author
The conventional view is the domestication of wolves began between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago. But recent evidence from the study of DNA in dogs and wolves points to a far earlier date for the first transformation of wolf to dog, over 100,000 years ago. This new evidence also suggests that wolves were domesticated several times, not just once, and that dogs have continued to crossbreed with wild wolves. Finally, sometimes we stumble on things that are unexplainable even when it comes to science. Take for example the behavior of Jaytee, a mongrel terrier who has shown the uncanny ability to anticipate the owner's arrival up to half an hour prior, or even more.

Surveys have demonstrated that 46 percent of dog owners in England and 45 percent of dog owners in California noticed this ability in their dogs, and in both surveys, dogs were capable of detecting their owner's arrival less than 5 minutes prior to when the person arrived home. Sheldrake believes that the "telepathy" between pets and humans, or between flocks of birds or schools of fish that move as a single organism, can be explained this theory. Sheldrake is less persuaded by anecdotes that suggest animal clairvoyance--warning of something in the near future--but refuses to disallow the possibility.
With a scientist's mind and an animal lover's compassion, Sheldrake compellingly demonstrates that we and our pets are social animals linked together by invisible bonds connecting animals to each other, to their owners, and to their homes in powerful ways. Sheldrake's provocative ideas about these social, or morphic, fields explain the uncanny behavior often observed in pets and help provide an explanation for amazing animal behavior in the wild, such as migration and homing. When you drop this helicopter from your hand it will slowly spin until it reaches the floor. You will only need a piece of paper to make it but you will see how much fun can be had with a very simple toy. RotorWay customers can also go straight to the factory.
These lines will guide the cuts and folds required to make your helicopter. This is not totally necessary but may help you to make a good helicopter. You will need a piece of paper, a paper clip, and some scissors.Large index cards, usually 5 inches (12.7 cm) by 7 inches, work really well for this project. The nature of the ground affects the strength of this cushion of air. Rough surfaces tend to dissipate it, thereby lessening the ground effect.
Homebuilt Helicopter Engines
So are helicopters harder to fly than an airplane? Airplanes are easier to fly as they are an aerodynamically stable aircraft which means they want to fly. Helicopters are an aerodynamically unstable aircraft which means they do not want to fly. The best way to test any homemade helicopter is under tethered restraint.
This helicopter flight simulator has it all for hours of fun and beneficial pre-pilot training. Attach the paperclip to the bottom of your helicopter. It should go over where you folded the length of your index card in half.

Creating a paper helicopter is a project geared more toward younger children. From your writing, you seem old enough for something more challenging. What do people do with their helicopters upon completion, besides attend fly-ins? As these are experimental craft, commercial use is prohibited. Rod Harms plans on using his Talon for two-hour jaunts to Chicago, packing luggage in a cargo compartment that fits under the cabin.
Flight controls on kit-built helicopters mimic those on their production counterparts. Let us assume that you’ve lifted into the hover, hover-taxied or flown to where you want to go, and landed your helicopter safely. If you do this smoothly and carefully, you may notice that the helicopter does not land on both skids together, but instead, the left skid touches the ground first . This is because most helicopters actually hover with the left skid low. Well, as explained, the tail rotor is there to prevent the fuselage from rotating when the rotor blades start to spin.

But when he or she does this, the angle of attack of the tail rotor blades needs to be similarly increased, using the pedals, to prevent the helicopter from yawing. Thus all the controls affect each other and their use needs to be coordinated, which is why, to a beginner, helicopter flying can seem so difficult. Finishing a helicopter both completes a challenge and begins another.
Now, since the force causing the fuselage to want to turn is actually acting along the whole length of the helicopter, what we really need is two small rotors to provide a correcting force at either end of the fuselage. But in practice, this would be extremely complicated to design, so we settle for a single force of double the required magnitude at the rear of the helicopter. This effectively stops the rotation, but now there is a resultant side force moving the helicopter to the right. There have been a few non-starters as the development costs of any engine is excessivly expensive.

Since the FAA does not certify unassembled kit helicopter models as airworthy, it offers no opinion on such matters. On the other hand, in case of mishap, the customer’s number-one legal target is himself, as manufacturer and chief mechanic. Fold the top flaps you made when you cut your paper almost halfway down lengthwise. They should both be folded down but in opposite directions, so that there is one flap on either side of the paper.Once you have folded and creased them, open these flaps up halfway. They have now formed the wings of your helicopter.
Controlling the helicopter in flight is done by altering the direction of the TRT. The cyclic control in the cockpit does this by altering the tilt of the whole rotor system, or what we call the rotor disc – ie the circular disc which the rotors make when they are turning. This means that if, for instance, the pilot moves the cyclic forward, the rotor disc tilts in the same direction. TRT, instead of being vertical, now has a horizontal component, so the helicopter moves forward.

Once skids depart ground, pilots must make constant, small corrections on the controls without delay. It was a sobering change in tone from that found in earlier magazine articles. One reason for trouble among novices is the phenomenon called dynamic rollover. So we raise the collective and increase the lift on the blades, and lift the helicopter into the hover. If the blades are whirling anti-clockwise, as most helicopter blades do, the fuselage will start to rotate clockwise, due to torque reaction.
Five companies dominate the North American market. Three make kits in the United States—RotorWay sells the Talon; Eagle R&D, the Helicycle; and Vertical Aviation Technologies, the Hummingbird— and Canada has two brands, Safari and Mosquito. RotorWay dominates the field, having shipped its first kit helicopter, the Scorpion, in 1967. Helicopters without wheels can only move on the ground by use of a dolly, tow-cart, or ground-handling wheels. Helicopters with wheels can be towed using a tow vehicle and towbar and can move by using the thrust produced by its main rotor when running.

When the rotor blades start to spin, the air flowing over them produces lift, just as when the wings of an airplane start to move. In the case of a helicopter, this is usually known as total rotor thrust . The direction and magnitude of this can be altered in order to control the helicopter.
A small version of the main rotor is mounted vertically at the end of the tail cone and effectively works by pushing the tailback as the fuselage tries to rotate. It’s like a sideways rotor system that is used to push the fuselage straight. You use the pedals to control the pitch of the tail rotor and thereby stop the helicopter from rotating. The crucial difference in helicopters is that the airflow is produced by rotating the ‘wings’ rather than by moving the whole aircraft.
It adds weight to the helicopter, keeping it upright. This is very important, or else the “wings” will flip as it is dropped. Fold your paper in half the opposite way as the previous folds. In essence you will be folding the length of the index card in half. Drop your helicopter from a variety of heights.
